Three Cups of Tea

"We breathed an air of utter satisfaction, of eternal peace. All this gives rise to a question. Isn't it better to live in ignorance of everything- asphalt and macadam, vehicles, telephones, television- to live in bliss without knowing it?" -Maraini

from my current Book Club book.

My Book Club list changed a bit. We didn't read Tortilla Curtain (author is a bit pervy, I read it though as I was the one to discover the perviness. Really makes you think about your own bigotry. The best of us have to be vigilant to not become bigots especially in the border states.) or The Mermaid Chair (I don't know the reasons for that).

March- Fried Green Tomatoes - a good book, you can pretend they are just good friends if you are like one lady in my book club

April- The Sword in the Stone (the first book of The Once and Future King-a must read in my opinion)- whimsical intro to the 700 page book, The Disney movie is loosely based on it. Camelot and Authorian mythology is my favorite.

May- Dewey The Small Town Library Cat who Touched the World - a fun, easy read, true story

June- Three Cups of Tea - so far so good, I recommend it. true story about an American man who starts schools in the mountains of Pakistan after a failed attempt at K2, It even comes in a chaptered version for 8 and up that I think I will purchase for Elijah when I finish the adult version. They even made a picture book of it.

August - The Story of Edward (Edgar?) Sawtelle - a long book, 562 pages, that is why we have it after the July break.

September -Stiff: the Curious Lives of Human Cadaver by Mary Roach.- I already read it that is why it is on our list. It gives an appreciation for how our medicine has advanced. A bit irreverent, but hilarious.

When our list increases I will add more. From the last time I posted this I read Anatomy of Peace and The Shack. I love suggestions when people comment what books they have read or I should read. Remember I like my books not pervy. I like the diversity as it makes for great brain exercise.

My current reads . . .

I don't know why but I do like to read more than one book at a time. I am currently reading "The 5000 Year Leap" which details the 28 principles that the founding fathers felt were necessary for America to succeed as a free country. It is filled with quotes that are inspiring. We are really on a path to lose what is precious. I pray for President Obama that his eyes will be opened to the people he has surrounded himself with. It is such a challenge because his education is flawed when it comes to American History.

I also just started "Yearning for the Living God" which is the story of Elder Busche. He was born in Germany three years before Hitler came to power and was a part of the Nazi Youth. The first three chapters have been excellent because they have given me a true look at what life was like for the some of the Germans during the time of the atrocities against the Jews. They really did not know what was going on. Incredible! And the details about what Hitler offered to them and how encouraged them are very interesting indeed.

Having watched Charles Dickens "Little Dorritt" this past week has made me really want to get that book to read soon. Thanks for posting your reads Sara. I too love to get recommendations.
